She is not an ordinary woman, her father is Admiral Mahmud Syah bin Admiral Muhammad Said Syah. His grandfather was the son of Sultan Salahuddin Syah who ruled Aceh from 1530 to 1539. His name was Keumalahayati, who would later be known as Malahayati. His face at that time looked full of sorrow but no one could deny that his eyes were lit up. After being accepted by the Sultan, Malahayati made an extraordinary request: “Let me form a fleet of soldiers consisting of widows of soldiers who died defending our religion and sultanate.” The Sultan was shocked, amazed by this idea. But after all this time, he understood because this elegant woman who was still his relative was indeed born into a family of admirals. However, there are still nagging questions: “Why from the widows?” At that moment, the flames appeared again in Malahayati’s eyes, “My husband, Sultan, died in the battle against the Portuguese in Teluk Haru. Even though at that time the Aceh fleet had succeeded in destroying the Portuguese ships, 1,000 soldiers died. I feel what their wives feel. We all have a desire to avenge the deaths of those we love for this world and the hereafter. ” So the Sultan allowed it so that history finally recorded an extraordinary event: the formation of the Inong Balee fleet. This fleet consisted of 1,000 widows of the mujahid who died. This number continues to grow to 2,000 people. Equipped with 100 ships, at that time the Inong Balee fleet became the strongest fleet in the Malacca Strait, even in Southeast Asia. When there was a clash with two Dutch merchant ships led by Cornelis de Houtman and Frederick de Houtman, Inong Balee’s fleet also faced him. Even Admiral Malahayati who fought one on one managed to kill Cornelis de Houtman with rencong in hand. Apart from being a squad leader, Admiral Malahayati was also an accomplished diplomat. He was finally sent by Sultan Alauddin to normalize relations with the Netherlands and received the Queen’s envoy to establish diplomatic relations. Buried in 1615 at the age of 65, Admiral Malahayati is listed as the founder of the largest army of widows in the world in history. He is one of the proofs that behind the beautiful faces of Acehnese women, there lies a glorious spirit of jihad.
